I’m not retired - I’m just getting started.
WELCOME
Welcome to my website. Here you’ll find information about the books I’ve written, the research I’ve conducted into sustainable retirement withdrawals, and some occasional philosophical musings. Hopefully, you’ll be informed, entertained and possibly amused.
Following is some information about me. I’m engaged in my fourth career, at the age of 71.
I received a BS from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1969, with great hopes of participating in space exploration. I abandoned that career when it became clear, with the winding down of the Apollo program, that there would be few job opportunities in that field for years to come.
I reluctantly joined my family’s soft drink bottling and distribution firm on Long Island in 1970 and was employed there for seventeen years. I ran the operation the last five years, at which point I convinced the family to sell it. Just in time, as our primary brand, 7up, took a nosedive shortly after we departed the business.
After a six-month hiatus, in 1988 I began a fee-only financial planning firm operating from my home just east of El Cajon, California. I practiced for twenty-five years and loved every minute of it. Financial Planning is a very rewarding profession, as one can make a difference in the lives of others every single day. I became a celebrity in the field because of research I published on “sustainable withdrawals from retirement accounts”- i.e., how not to go broke in retirement. I spoke at many financial planning conferences and was quoted in all the major financial publications: Barron’s, Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s, New York Times, etc.
In 2015 I decided to pursue an unfulfilled dream: become a writer of fiction. Through my whole life, beginning with grade school, teachers, friends, clients and colleagues have told me how much they enjoyed my writing. And I finally had something to say!
